About CCALC
County Adult Literacy Council is a fully volunteer staffed, nonprofit
organization that exists to serve the literacy needs of adults living
in the county, or can reach services in it.
The illiteracy rate in Collin County is approximately 11 percent; 18%
of residents do not speak English at home and 13% are foreign born.
Our affiliate literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) providers
are working diligently help our students learn to read, write and speak
English, as well as pass the GED test. We also have programs which provide
basic adult education. We do this through volunteer efforts in classrooms,
small groups, and one-to-one tutoring sessions.
Our volunteers give thousands of hours of their time each year, serving
an average of 170 students at each affiliate site.
Even this tremendous effort does not reflect the demand, however, since
a great number are put on waiting lists every year.
